Now you can compost your waste for less in Bristol |
![]() |
Home composting is one of the most environmentally friendly ways to deal with food and garden waste and turn it into valuable food for the garden. It's easy to make, easy to use and now its even cheaper to get started thanks to the city council's Autumn offer on home compost bins.
The city council are cutting the prices by at least 25% and from 1st October until the end of next March, residents have the chance to buy bins for as little as £12, including delivery to their door. We want to encourage people to compost their organic waste at home, so the council is subsidising the cost of the bins to make them more affordable to residents, said Councillor Judith Price, Bristol City Council Cabinet Member for Homes and Streetscene.
It's estimated people can compost about a third of the average household waste. This includes fruit and vegetable peelings, paper, cardboard, pet hair and even the contents of your vacuum cleaner. It produces nutrient rich compost for flowers and plants, saves money on fertilizers and protects the environment." The bins are available to residents through a national scheme run by environmental organisation WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme). WRAP subsidise the cost of the bins themselves but, due to budget cuts this year, they have had to reduce their subsidy, which had meant a slight increase in cost.
The price reductions are as follows:
· the Compost Converter (220l) has been reduced from £17 to £12;
· the Compost Converter (330l) has been reduced from £20 to £15;
· the Komp 250 is down from £40 to £30

Pallets from Riverside Garden Centre.
Submitted by John Holland:
Riverside Garden Centre is usually a source of free pallets - perfect for making compost bins etc! Surplus pallets are left in a corner of the car park, on the right hand side just inside the gates. If you can't see any there, the chances are that none are currently available, so you'll need to call again in a day or two.
